Leda Maria

Critical evaluation by Harry Nasse
Leda has been a member of the Ward Nasse Gallery for over 08 years. We were immediately impressed with this artist’s presentation of works that she made in her Brazilian homeland. We knew from the beginning that this artist was special. It was apparent that she could work competently and professionally in many styles and media.
Her installation "Between Desire and Seduction" performed here in December 2004 was a spectacular success. Over the past few years she has participated in many of our shows and she exhibits in our International Salon.
Her solo show “I Like Blue but I Prefer Red" was one of our memorable exhibitions. All of Leda's works express her own unique sensitivity to light, as well as form and color, yet there is an underlying visual strength that showily surfaces in all her works.
She uses many different media. There is no limit to the various materials that might be used in achieving certain effects. She can combine incongruous shapes and objects and make them work together with unusual skill and sensitivity. Leda is an artist through and through. She is one of the best. I am sure this will become more and more apparent as time goes on as she continues to make her mark in the art world.

The Painting of Leda Maria by Enock Sacramento

The series of paintings “It is not what it seems to be” created by Leda Maria, immediately remind us of the composition “Everything is not what it seems”, theme music of “Wizards of Waverly Place” played by Selena Gomez and, especially, the famous work of Rene Magritte “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” ( this is not a pipe). Selena tells us, in this Disney production, that “exaggerations may compromises” and that “when you have something for the simple pleasure, you should not abuse of the power, because not everything is what it seems. “Magritte, on the other hand, puts in “The treachery of images”, mature work from 1929, the question of perception and representation. That is, the image of a pipe, however analog it is, it is not a pipe, but its artistic representation. And those who think the image is a pipe should try to fill it with tobacco or smoking with it.

Leda Maria often puts in the works of this series one eye to emphasize the pitfalls of the vision, the possible inconsistencies in the images and the disagreement of certain plastic codes. Regarding her paintings, she confesses knowing what is she talking about, but not the interpretation her works will receive, but that “makes important discoveries by accident is part of the plan.”

Besides this series, Leda Maria has worked in installations with the use of various materials and paintings with the “dripping” technique, created by Max Ernest and developed in extremis by Jackson Pollock, creating paintings of action ( action painting), exempting the easel and the brushes, characterized by unique sinuosity and dynamism.
